Following last week’s panel discussion on whether to ban televised gambling ads, we found some example of good gambling ads that spread positive energy. If every gambling company could produce ads like these, we think airing gambling ads is actually better off than banning gambling ads for the society.
Making of Sky Tweets – Paddy Power
Paddy Power is famous for their controversial ads, but this one isn’t debatable. When the Ryder Cup was taking place in 2012, Paddy Power encouraged fans to engage on social media to support their domestic team. A fleet of planes then took the sky above the Medinah Country club and sprayed special sky tweets written by the fans to back the European team. It aroused patriotism in people. I bet we all have certain moments that even if we know the chance of our country to win in a match is small, we still bet on our country just to show some support. Of course, in order to pull off a trick like that in real life, you need a deep pocket. A little photoshop wouldn’t hurt either if you could make a virtual video as creative and positive like this.
Life is a game – Bet at Home
No one would forget what Zidane did during the final at World Cup 2006. That head banging cost France a World Cup title but also set an example of how we should treat bully: we fight back! The gesture is especially useful for the weak, be it woman, minority or the disabled.
Bet-at-home’s ‘life is a game’ campaign sends a clear message: life is a game, we have nothing to lose. We shouldn’t too afraid to confront our superior out of the fear of losing a job. After all, we can just get a new job, and probably a better one. Saying or acting nothing would only allow the wrongdoer to think that it is okay to do that, to justify their behavior. Even if you leave the company, the next woman would suffer the same. Therefore, we should stand up not only for ourselves but for all the victim women. The Zidane move the ad promotes might be a bit violent, but the key message is to promote girl power and to stand up against sexual harassment.
Mr Brightside – Bet Responsibly – Ladbrokes
Mr Brightside is the gambler that everyone should look up to. The ad of Ladbrokes conveys the message that even if you were that close to a win, you should still let it go and move on. Sunk cost fallacy has been widely cited in behavioral economics. Economists argue that sunk costs should not be calculated when making rational decisions. The earlier you ignore sunk cost, the better. However, human are irrational beings that we often get too fixated on sunk cost due to loss aversion. Nothing should stand in your way to have fun. After all, having fun is the most important thing.
Don’t know if everyone has a friend like this. Two friends of mine actually enjoy losing. They won’t leave the casino until they lose certain amount of money, as if they lose here, they will gain somewhere else. In Asian countries, it is widely believed that a financial loss may prevent disaster. Thus, we should never take money too seriously and let money rule our life. Money will come and go, but love, family, friendship and belief will stay.
